After all the days, hours and months of preparation, we were finally on our way to Macedonia, for the last leg of the International Renewable Energy Case Competition (IRECC). Karl, Ting, Jane and I made our way to the airport on Tuesday morning, with everyone else leaving at different times and in different countries, hoping to meet up safely in Macedonia the next day. Our connecting flight was long and arduous, but thrilling because we had a chance to stop by in Amsterdam and Slovenia before landing in the capital of Skopje – pronounced like Scope-yay.

Since we arrived a day early, we all had a chance to check out our new surroundings and explore the capital city before we started filming. We tested our equipment to make sure everything was in working order and we hit the road. $20 USD is worth just above $1,000 MKD (Macedonian Denars) and we quickly found out just how cheap things really were in Macedonia. A slice of pizza and a drink costs a whopping $120 MKD, just above $2 USD.

We quickly realized that, not only was the food cheap, but the city vibrant. People moving about, Street performers happily entertaining, and animals roaming the streets everywhere. We knew we were in for quite the experience. We met many friendly people, willing to lend a hand to lost tourists and we were very greatful for the help. After roaming the city and taking in its breadth, our stomachs’ were grumbling and we settled upon a small cafe in the Tarkovski Square.

After dinner, we headed back to our Hotel and took a bit of a rest – a 24 hour flight would get you tired too – in preparation for the night. We eagerly waited for the American competitors and Viktorija, one of our Canadian competitors for a night on the town.

To our surprise, the nights were even more lively than the days, with a SKOPSKO event (Local Beer), circus performers and great food. A great Day 1, as it only got better with the rest of the competitiors and IBB team arriving by midnight. Tomorrow, we learn about Hydro electricity in Skopje and how it integrates with the landscape. Cheers!
